Czechs are fanatical about KFC. There was a KFC location on almost every block, open late, with dirt cheap food. We broke down and tried it for our Thanksgiving Dinner. For like we had enough food for a week. The highlight was their "Fuller Menu". A nauseating mass of mashed potatoes, corn, chicken strips, and green onions - smothered with gravy and then cheese. Oy!

We were supposed to do a job in Italy
and, full of our feeling for
ourselves (our sense of being
Poets from America) we went
from Rome to Fano, met
the Mayor, mulled
a couple matters over (what's
"cheap date" they asked us;what's
"flat drink?")Among Italian literati
we could recognize our counterparts:
the academic, the apologist,
the arrogant, the amorous,
the brazen and the glib--and there was one
administrator (the conservative), in suit
of regulation gray, who like a good tour guide
with measured pace and uninflected tone narrated
sights and histories the hired van hauled us past.
Of all, he was most politic--and least poetic,
so it seemed. Our last few days in Rome
(when all but three of the New World Bards had flown)
I found a book of poems this
unprepossessing one had written: it was there
in the pensione room (a room he'd recommended)
where it must have been abandoned by
the German visitor (was there a bus of them?)
to whom he had inscribed and dated it a month before.
I couldn't read Italian either, so I put the book
back in the wardrobe's dark. We last Americans
were due to leave tomorrow. For our parting evening then
our host chose something in a family restaurant,and there
we sat and chatted, sat and chewed,
till, sensible it was our last
big chance to be poetic, make
our mark, one of us asked
"What's poetry?
Is it the fruits and vegetables and
marketplace of Campo dei Fiori, or
the statue there?" Because I was
the glib one, I identified the answer
instantly, I didn't have to think-- "The truth
is both, it's both" I blurted out. But that
was easy. That was easiest to say. What followed
taught me something about difficulty,
for our underestimated host spoke out,
all of a sudden, with a rising passion, and he said:
The statue represents Giordano Bruno,
brought to be burned in the public square
because of his offense against
authority, which is to say
the Church. His crime was his belief
the universe does not revolve around
the human being: God is no
fixed point or central government,but rather is
poured in waves through all things. All things
move. "If God is not the soul itself, He is
the soul of the soul of the world." Such was
his heresy. The day they brought him
forth to die they feared he might
incite the crowd (the man was famous
for his eloquence). And so his captors
placed upon his face
an iron mask, in which
he could not speak. That's
how they burned him. That is how
he died: without a word, in front
of everyone.

I am really proud of Clint Dempsey who after a long struggle with his MLS team about not letting him go to England has finally ended up in the Premiership at the very team he was competing against in my photo, three future players in England - Fulham.
Of course it feels sort of cheap since Chris Coleman had a penchant for snatching up any half decent Yank to put on the team to create Fulhamerica.
Still his strategy works and with three players from the United States and a fourth from Canada, the club actually had a United States Day. I hadn't planned this to be the reason I was at the match (I just wanted to see my two favorite teams play each other).
But all throughout my section were reminders of this fact.
Though looking closely at this guy's face and his location, he might just be a relative of Clint Dempsey and not just a huge fan. If he's caught on that much in England already, there's no worries about his future at all.

Mobile Phones in Tokyo's Subways

Text messaging is extremely popular in Tokyo for lots of reasons. First, it's cheaper than making a voice call. If you message someone in the same network, it's totally free.
Second, it's considered extremely rude to talk on the phone while in certain public places - like subways. In other places, it's against the law. So people have to resort to text messaging.
While waiting for a subway, you'll see legions of people whip out their mobile phones and start text messaging.

Near my hotel, this was a fantastic collection of stalls and shops, selling everything from beach gear to tchotchkes to hand made jewelry and crafts. And pretty cheap food stalls, too. I bought a tiki mask from one of the vendors and even got to haggle over the price!
The carp pond is in the center, near the Kalakaua Ave entrance.
Hong Kong's Star Ferry

The Star Ferry is a cheap, easy, and scenic way to cross Victoria Harbour over to Kowloon. It's in all the guide books and you'll find locals and tourists on it.
It's not a very long trip to Kowloon though. So you only get a few minutes to take in the beautiful views.

Nigi Nigi was best known as the happy hour place, offering really cheap beers and buy-one-take-one cocktails, but they've since upgraded their facilities.

Like the other stuff, everything is very cheap in Thailand. Rishab's uncle booked a 3 star hotel for us in Bangkok.
When we first saw the place, we thought that maybe his uncle had misjudged us and thought of us as extremely rich people. The place was so classy and over the top, we were not used to such luxuries.
The best part was that it was only 500 Baht per person per day!!!

Grand Cayman - Hell

This is a dead coral reef further inland on Grand Cayman Island. Ages ago when the island expanded, this reef was pushed above water. To some people, this could resemble Hell.
But Hell, on this island, is very cheap and tacky. It could be really cool if they talked about the history and geology but noooo... all they have a little gift shop that sells all sorts of "Hell" related merchandise and you can send postcards from Hell to you friends. And the owner dresses up in a really pitiful Devil's costume. That's about all there is there.

Reading our books on the beach on our 1st day in Oahu. This was really a lazy day, with minmal exploration, except for a 5.95$ lunch plate at a Hawaian chinese spot called "chop suey" on the north shore. As I was packing, I realized that I did not own a single pair of shoes that would be appropriate to wear around in the snow. After dropping by bags off at the hotel, my first stop was the Discount Shoe Warehouse Shoe Warehouse, where I picked up an absolutely hideous pair of flat boots. They were far from stylish, but they were cheap and served me well as I walked around in a miserable blizzard for the better part of the weekend.

On our recent trip to Mexico, I saw something I'd never seen before. This road crew was filling in holes in the road with dirt. This is Highway 1, the main highway that runs the length of Baja California between Tijuana and Cabo San Lucas.
If they don't do better road maintenance in Mexico, their roads will end up as bad as the ones in California.
