In the late 1800s and early 20th century fetes drew crowds into the courtyard and in May 1937 the Earl of Dudley opened Dudley Zoological Society with exotic animals from across the world.
Dudley Zoological Gardens is a 40-acre zoo located within the grounds of Dudley Castle in the town of Dudley.
Our most recent visit has showed us how much improved the site has become. Well done Dudley.

There was a shed with a learning themed angle for kids. They taught about planets and a variety of exotic animals. Here's one of them, a tortoise.

Probably one of the few places one can see a kangaroo in Leicester :)
I have no idea what this building on Leicester's High street is, but the decoration with Union Jacks and exotic animals suggests it was constructed in a burst of raw Imperial enthusiasm.
If I had to hazard a guess as to the period I'd say the 1920s?
Later: OK, turns out it's the Singer Building - also known as the Coronation Building or Jubilee Building - constructed by Architect and Mayor Arthur Wakerley in 1904. Looks like my building dating skills need some work.
