Not so Free - but healthy & happy... Vera, a longtailed macaque

This is just one of the many animals rescued by the Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park in Gibraltar. This small but well-run non-profit organisation picks up exotic animals confiscated by Gibraltar customs and unwanted exotic pets. If you are visiting Gibraltar, go see the good work they are doing .. with very little funding! www.alamedawildlifepark.webs.com

While for me these count as "exotic animals" -- ones I'm not going to find in the Americas -- there are so many of them that guides don't even comment on them or stop the truck when they appear.

Chameleon Forest Dragon Hatchling
The Smithsonian’s National Zoo’s Reptile Discovery Center welcomed into its collection four chameleon forest dragons (Gonyocephalus chamaeleontinus), also known as chameleon anglehead lizards, on Nov. 11. These young are the first of their kind to hatch at the Zoo. The parents arrived at the National Zoo’s Rock Creek facility in June 2009 and, while in quarantine, the female laid the four eggs. Because so little is known about this species, keepers are closely monitoring the hatchlings’ food intake and behavior in an off-exhibit enclosure. Visitors can view the parents inside the Reptile Discovery Center, near the building’s entrance.
A chameleon forest dragon’s scaly skin is a brilliant lime green when it hatches. As it matures, its color will either stay green or change to a brown-tan tone with dark brown markings. These colors mimic tree leaves and bark—an essential camouflage that helps hide this arboreal reptile from predators. Equipped with lean limbs and five curved, clawed digits on each of their feet, forest dragons easily maneuver through the trees of their native Indonesia and west Malaysia.
But their name is deceptive: chameleon forest dragons are neither chameleons nor dragons; rather, this species is a type of lizard called an agamid (pronounced “AG-uh-mid”). However, some scientists speculate that, like a true chameleon, the forest dragon’s subtle color shifts help it blend into its surroundings, send social signals, and even reflect mood changes. Its short, triangular head resembles that of a mythical dragon, and spiky, leaf-shaped ridge plates adorn the crown of its head and extend the length of its back. Fully grown, this lizard can reach up to 12 inches in length, from nose to tip of the tail.

Beware of Macrame
Seriously. If you ever spot an adult sporting a large backpack, adorned with a plush animal and a variety of macrame keychains, do not look directly at the adult, or engage him in conversation. It will not end well.

CD414 Thysania agrippina
Visit to Insectropolis with Brian, Nana and Papa, August 2009.
Thanks to leandroinsect14 for properly identifying this moth!
From Wikipedia:
Thysania agrippina is a large moth in the Noctuidae family. It has a wingspan of up to 12 inches (31 cm), making it the Lepidopteran with the biggest wingspan. (The Atlas moth, however, has a greater wing area.) The White Witch is found in Mexico, Central and South America, but it appears as a stray as far north as Texas.
This species is considered endangered in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, where it reaches the southern limit of its distribution.
No confirmed rearing records are available for this species. Based on reports for sister species Thysania zenobia that feeds on Senna and Cassia, the larval host plants for the White Witch are probably also woody Fabaceae (subfamily Caesalpinioideae). The larva illustrated by Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) as Thysania agrippina is a Sphingidae, possibly Pseudosphinx tetrio or Pachylia syces.

The most horrible thing I have ever awakened to find

Yes, that's right. I woke up this morning to find this:
A huge, ginormous freaking cockroach in my shoe. I just about vomited there and then.
This is unforgivably horrible.

2013.01.09 A stray bird of prey
I looked out my kitchen window, while getting water from my fridge, and much to my amazement a large bird of prey was perched on a branch of the tree where my bird feeder hangs!
I caught several pictures of it, and chose not to chase him off yet, so I did not get a picture of his wing span.
It wasn't until getting ready to publish this that I saw the strangely curved branches around him forming a heart shaped frame!
Wow that was a lucky shot!
Still have to decide whether I should chase him off, to protect my song birds, or let nature take its course!
