The wolverine is Michigan's unofficial state animal and the mascot of the University of Michigan, even though there's no evidence wolverines ever actually lived in Michigan.
Last year the Detroit Zoo caused an incredible furor by naming two wolverine kits "Bucky" and "Sparty" after the U of M's biggest rivals, the Ohio State University Buckeyes and Michigan State University's Spartans.
