Scarce Copper
Male of Scarce Copper butterfly (Lycaena virgaureae Scopoli, 1763) on flowers of Golden Rod (Solidago virgaurea Linnaeus), in the Swiss Alps.
Photographed near the snout of Morteratsch Glacier, Graubünden, Switzerland. There are also two flies here, almost hidden. Altitude c.2000 m
Happy taxonomic coincidence - the species names of the flower ('virgaurea' = Latin for 'golden rod') and the butterfly ('virgaureae' = 'of golden rod') coincide because the butterfly is commonly found on these flowers, though the host plant of the butterfly is actually dock (Rumex).
(However, I took this for the butterfly, so the flowers are slightly out of focus.)
We used this image for our printed Christmas Card in December 2010
