We found Charlie on the street in our neighborhood last Saturday night, huddled up with a bloody, broken tail. We took him for emergency care, then brought him to Bide-a-Wee for (free!) surgery and adoption on Monday. Good luck, Charlie!

You can adopt him here.

Don't contribute to the population of abandoned cats and dogs dying out there in the streets -- get your friend spayed or neutered.

Freebies! | [Day 42/365]

I love getting free stuff, especially when I'm broke. I had to pick out clip times from Little Miss Sunshine, and I didn't have enough money to rent it (told you I was broke), and the library had it just freshly returned. I also needed to print off about 140 pages in one day, after my printer died. Luckily, the University gives everyone 30 pages a day to print free. I used my quota and asked around the computer lab to use any leftovers anyone had. I think about 5 people lent me what they didn't use. They are pretty much my heroes.Thank you, fellow students, for saving my ass. You've slightly restored my faith in humanity.

20110410 1531 - National Siblings Day - comparing Carolyn's henna hair - flocking goldfish - (by Vicky)

Carolyn's newly-hennaed hair was still oxidizing, so it was bright yellow-orange. We were having fun comparing it to orange objects.

The goldfish were really fun, because they seemed to be attracted to the strand of orange hair Carolyn was holding up by the fishtank. They all flocked over to it.

BACKSTORY: Britt wanted to do something together with her brother, Clint. We also found out Vicky was available, so she came too. Ryan wasn't able to make it because he was having computer problems.

After much hemming and hawing about what to do, we decided to go to Pizza MaGills. Pizza MaGills has an all-you-can eat buffet featuring foods like tacos, spaghetti, chicken, lasagna, pizza, soup, salad, macaroni, ice cream, papusas, french fries, and other kid-friendly foods.

Carolyn was looking forward to playing skee-ball, but it turned out the arcade section left a lot to be desired. One skee-ball machine worked, and it scored wrong 50% of the time. Eventually Clint just stood there grabbing the balls in mid air (for free play) because there was no point in abiding by the rules when playing on a broken machine. Their DDR machine had 2 huge metal dancepads, but when you put money in it, it had a missing USB error and only one player could play at a time. And the screen was broken, with a smaller television put in front of it. Most of the multi-player games only had one working player left.

The thing is, they make most of their money from tour buses that come in. Five buses of middle & highschoolers arrived while we were there, and the line was out the door. They made thousands of dollars. And since most of their customers are not repeat customers, they don't really have a reason to fix their aracade games. It's sad to see how much deline that place is. They used to have an array of cakes and puddings (all you can eat, of course) you could select from, but now they just seem to have ice cream. And they stopped selling wine awhile back, too.

Still -- if you want food that is way better than fast food, and cheaper than restaurant food, and you don't want to wait an extra second to get it - This is the #1 place I'd recommend. We hung out there for well over 2 hours.

After being a vegetarian for many years, I fell victim to the "bacon sandwich" surely the ultimate temptation and now meat forms a small, but regular part of my diet.

Wherever possible I try to buy meat that has been raised with maximum regard for the welfare of the animals, free to forage, exposed to sun and rain.

It was a delight therefore to visit two families of piglets just a few weeks old.
Piglets are incredibly friendly little animals, intelligent and playful. Better watch out for mum though if she thinks you are up to no good!

The Lion Habitat at MGM Grand Vegas

Once again on Thursday, June 7, 2007, we lounged around the timeshare, enjoying the sun on the patio. Then Carl and I took a cab to MGM and ate lunch at Wolfgang Puck's. We enjoyed The Lion Habitat for free. We crossed the strip (overhead bridge) to the Tropicana and viewed the "Bodies" Exhibit. We quickly returned to the resort by cab and changed clothes. Carl and I took a cab to the Mirage and attended the show, "Love - The Beatles" by Cirque du Soleil . Afterwards we took a tram next door to TI (Treasure Island) where we had a quick supper and enjoyed an interesting show at Kahunaville and did some late night shopping knowing that we would be leaving in the morning. See the set of photos to be viewed as a slideshow. See a video too.

Free training benefits donkeys in poor Bangladeshi communities
PRESS RELEASE from The Donkey Sanctuary
8 November 11

Donkeys in south east Bangladesh are benefiting from a second round of free training and advice being offered to their owners this month by international animal welfare charity, The Donkey Sanctuary.

The charity’s team from neighbouring India is working with the owners to improve the welfare of donkeys in the area’s poor village communities. Donkeys are a vital means of transport in this area, where often the only route to take crops to market is along steep, narrow, mountain pathways. Helping communities take better care of their donkeys will also help the communities work their way out of poverty.

The training offered by The Donkey Sanctuary is part of a wider project working with Helen Keller International (HKI) and Bangladeshi organisation SHIREE, to reduce the extreme poverty experienced by the Chatma farming communities in the Chittagong Hill Tracts region of Bangladesh.

Earlier this year, The Donkey Sanctuary team spent four days with 26 women from four separate villages who are responsible for the welfare of the donkeys in their community. The charity provided practical training on how to look after their donkeys including advice on feeding, shelter and health care. They spent time working with the women, developing harnesses and techniques for the safe transportation of heavy loads. Local vets and animal health providers were also given training on the treatment and prevention of common conditions in donkeys.

Joe Anzuino, The Donkey Sanctuary’s Head of International Veterinary Services, reflects on this first round of training and explains the benefit that donkeys bring to these communities:

“Many of these women cannot read or write, but knew a lot about keeping their animals and had a natural empathy for them. The team were able to build upon this knowledge and, using practical exercises and pictures, develop the skills and understanding necessary for looking after donkeys well, including what to feed donkeys, how to house them, and the best types of harness for the work they’d be doing.

“Although The Donkey Sanctuary does not promote the use of donkeys, we do appreciate the contribution they can make in communities such as the Chittagong Hill Tracts, where the only alternative way of transporting goods to market is for people to carry them themselves. The priority for us is always the welfare of the donkey, so our message in everything we say and do is that treating donkeys well is not only right, but the best way to make sure they can be more comfortable in their work.”

The Donkey Sanctuary team are visiting the communities again later this month to check up on the donkeys and assist with any questions that may have arisen amongst those responsible for their care.

About The Donkey Sanctuary
International animal welfare charity The Donkey Sanctuary was founded by the late Dr Elisabeth Svendsen M.B.E. in 1969 and aims to protect donkeys and mules and promote their welfare worldwide.

The Donkey Sanctuary supports projects to relieve the suffering of donkeys in 29 countries worldwide, including sanctuaries across Europe, where more than 14,500 donkeys and mules have been cared for, and major projects in Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Kenya and Mexico, where donkey welfare is improved through community education and veterinary work.

Any donation, no matter how small, is gratefully received by The Donkey Sanctuary and one of the best ways to support the charity into the future is to give regularly by direct debit.

I like these happy cows, even though they are both missing teeth. I feel they should be holding a milkshake between them, or a rotating display of butter busts.

They are instead emblematic of the probelm w/ these animals being produced conventionally. That warning is not for your benefit. They're afraid you and your filthy offspring will give the animals something that can spread like wildfire in a stressed and confined population.

The handwashing is for you and the food vendors.
