It's an Earwig that was eating from a berry on the hedge in my garden - and it really didn't like me poking my lens at it very much. So I think this is probably some defence gesture of some sort - if I were a small animal I might think twice if faced with these =).

But, what's interesting about this, is that it's a night shot - not taken during daylight. I took it in pitch dark about 30 mins ago, perched with a torch in my left hand and cam in my right, with homemade diffuser version 4 (my bracket died on my so I'm having to mount the flash on top. Diffuser 2 was sacrificed). It's pretty windy and being September, trying spitting the occasional raindrop, and this is with a reverse mounted lens at f/5.6 (ie dark through the viewfinder). I personally would never have known this is nighttime.

I discovered night macro last night and it's a pleasing, albeit quite challenging, discovery. I'm a working guy so have no chance to do this stuff for 5 days out of 7, and we're about to get back into 'go to work in the dark, come back from work in the dark' territory, so at least this allows me to indulge a bit. Whilst the wife & kids are watching TV I'm out taking pics in the dark. They think I'm weird.

Technical, K-7, 400 ISO, 65 cm extension, reverse el-nikkor@5.6, diffuserV4, flash@1/8

Wildlife Overpass

As part of the third phase of the Kicking Horse Canyon Project, two wildlife overpasses have been completed. This one is located approximately 17km east of Golden.

Wildlife is the number one primary contributing factor to collisions in B.C., so overpasses like these not only protect animals, they save human lives too.
