Recipients of Pulque and Images of Drunkards
"In the landscape of central Mexico it is common to find maguey, a cactus with broad leaves called pencas that end in steep, sharp spines that were used as needles and ritual barbs. This sacred plant was the goddess Mayahuel, and it gave people many products; the pencas were used as roofing material for houses, and yielded the textile fibers for weaving; within the plant lived delicious worms- a delicacy enjoyed to this day- and from the center of maguey, if it is softly scraped, there comes a honeydew which turns into pulque when fermented.
Pulque, neutle in Nahuatl, has a strong odor and a high alcoholic content. Its patron was the god Ome Tochtli "Two Rabbit." In view of its calorific value, adults were only allowed one drink, and drunkenness was prohibited because the excess of pulque would make people fall under the influence of Cenzon Totchtin or "Four Hundred Rabbits," which meant losing control and becoming aggressive and violent."
