A SHORT ESSAY ABOUT CHINESE FREE ENTERPRISE
WHEN MAO MADE THE LONG MARCH, did he have visions of the China that would eventually become the reality it is today?
Somewhere, back in his mind, there was a spark of free-enterprise igniting energy. Today, we see how that spark has fundamentally transformed a nation from hopeless poverty to comfortable prosperity.
One of my first clues that there were embers of free enterprise in China was the marvelous transition of Hong Kong from Britain to China. Despite rumors, Hong Kong remained pretty much the same and served as a weigh station for the new economy.
But of course, there are always "buts" and "if you only knew" type of arguments about the sucess of the new China; this is normal. What one must look at is the big picture. We are now seeing Chinese on vacation in America spending money like Americans once spent money in Paris, so go figure. Is China a kinder and more gentler nation than it was? It appears it is.
Where the West made their mistake; where we made our mistake, was getting involved in politics that were none of our business--plain and simple.
There were foolish decisions made by some Western leaders who failed to realize the kind of energy that could become united in efforts to give birth to a new China. Had our leaders simply reread our own history, they would have understood what sovereignty means to a people who were tired of being led by committees of foreign nationals.

i love to go a wandering

mojca and i thought we were so tough to go out hiking on our own. but after slipping in mud, getting attacked by leeches and bees, scratches and dirt, we didn't seem so tough when we got back to camp having stopped short of our destination. Mojca said it best as we ran back down the mountain: "No more jungle!!"
