The Lonely, Self-Pitying Melancholia of the Business Traveler at the End of the Day
An airport anywhere in the country, anywhere in the world, for that matter: The terminal stretches away from you into infinity, the sun is plummeting below the horizon, and you feel empty and alone. You didn't sleep well in your overnight hotel room, you've been running on pure adrenaline since getting up this morning, many hours ago, with clients all day, trying to remain focused on the slightest nuance that might give you an edge. The meeting went well, more or less, and now you're crashing. You're miles and many hours from home, still have to catch another, uncertain connecting flight after this one and drive home from the airport before you see your loved ones. The scene on the tarmac looks as lonely as you feel. You stop staring at the sunset and give yourself a little shake, to get rid of your self-pitying rut. You know that lots of people would love to have your job, or to have stayed at the elegant little boutique hotel where you spent your sleepless night. Pull yourself together. Have a cup of coffee, boot up the laptop and send some emails. Better yet -- give the laptop a rest, and take some pictures.
