Giraffe herd (Giraffa camelopardalis)
The giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) is an African even-toed ungulate mammal, the tallest living terrestrial animal and the largest ruminant. Its binomial name refers to its camel-like face and the patches of color on its fur. Its chief distinguishing characteristics are its extremely long neck and legs, its horn-like ossicones and its distinctive markings.
The giraffe on the left is a Reticulated Giraffe. The baby and adult giraffe on the right are Rothschild Giraffe's.
The Rothschild giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi) is also known as the Baringo or Ugandan giraffe. Its range includes parts of Uganda and Kenya. Fewer than 700 are believed to remain in the wild, and more than 450 are kept in zoos. This is one of the most endangered subspecies of giraffe.
The most obvious difference between giraffe subspecies is with the color of the of the coat, or pelt. Where the Reticulated Giraffe has very clearly defined dark patches with bright whitish channels between them, the Rothschild Giraffe subspecies is paler, the orange-brown patches are less jagged and sharp in shape and the connective channel is of a creamier hue compared to that seen on the Reticulated Giraffe.
