Dearest CBC Overlords:

Mike Milbury has no place on Canadian television after his ludicrous and hateful comments have been allowed to air twice now. "Pansification" is a derogatory, vile and wholly unnecessary way to describe what he and others feel is a change in the way hockey is played. If hockey is morphing into a game that is losing its edge, then he needs to say just that and not make flippant, bigoted statements about sexual orientation. Say that the players and teams lack heart, say that they are lacking fortitude, complain that the NHL is driving out or suppressing courage or guts or mettle, say any number of things that might clearly indicate what you mean, but don't make a group of people your scapegoat because of the issue of fighting in hockey.

Are your broadcasters and commentators so ill-educated that they cannot express themselves without resorting to using inflammatory language and snide remarks? It used to be the goal of play-by-play men and announcers to build large vocabularies so that they might accurately describe the games in an interesting manner - I can't imagine Dick Irvin or Howie Meeker, for example, saying anything so miserably stupid on broadcast television.

Further, it has long been a hallmark of the CBC in general, including Hockey Night in Canada, to act in an inclusive and civil manner to all people. People who aren't heterosexual are often not made very welcome in sports and it's long overdue for the CBC to address that issue much in the way the station has reported on racism in sports. This NHL season much has been made of the great efforts of Parminder Singh and Harnarayan Singh in their Punjabi broadcasts, something that was deservedly applauded by the CBC and everyone else. Why then does the queer community get ridiculed on air at least twice so far this season and then effectively told to shut up, stop complaining and not to engage in censorship when they complain? Would a similar series of events had occurred had Mr. Milbury slandered the Sikh community? Ron MacLean should have apologised, agreed that Mr. Milbury was wrong, and we should most certainly NOT have seen Mr. Milbury on the CBC again. Instead, we initially got to witness some mealy-mouthed tap-dancing by Mr. MacLean and then a direct offensive in which he tried to claim, somehow, that "pansification" was not a slur. Finally the hostile Mr. Milbury was again allowed to speak on air and made it abundantly clear that he still held his same noxious opinions and that he ought to be allowed by the CBC to spout them, loudly.

Mr. Milbury has no business being on television anywhere, and certainly not on the CBC, which is owned and operated by the people of Canada. I request his immediate dismissal.

i sent the cbc that email tonight, also contacting the crtc. for those who are wondering what it's all about, here's the cbc's story of the issue. the old cbc logo was designed by burton cramer in 1974 and is free to use with attribution. i've modified it very slightly here.

*update*

the crtc has responded and is interested in what the cbc has to say, having also contacted the cbc themselves at this point.
