Colorado - Idaho Springs: Erickson Building and Faivre Building
The Erickson Building, at 1630 Miner Street, was built by Edward Erickson from 1879-1990. The building housed a variety of businesses through the years, but Erickson maintained it until 1918 when he sold it to Simon Weinberger for use as a saloon, which sported the city's first electric sign. At other times, it served as a meat market and the "GEM" movie theatre.
The Faivre Building, now known as "Big Pink," at 1634-1636 Miner Street, was constructed in 1880 for Dennis Faivre. Dennis Faivre (1827-1887) was born in Pennsylvania, caught gold fever in 1859 and built the Currier and Faivre Mill in 1860 near Black Hawk. He returned east to get his family and came to Idaho Springs in 1862, where he opened the first dry goods store in the district--a small wooden structure, replaced with this brick building once the Colorado Central Railroad arrived in town, providing access to building materials and more clientele. While Faivre was building his "double-wide" business block, Jacob Bloom, later Bloom and Noxon, added a second story to his building (Lot 5, the western portion of Big Pink).
The Idaho Springs Downtown Commercial District, roughly bound by Center Alley, 14th Avenue, Riverside Drive, and Idaho Street, has been the commercial center of the community since its development in the late 19th century. The Idaho Springs downtown area, with its collection of Late Victorian-Era structures, formed the core of a city where prospector George A. Jackson made the first placer gold discovery in Colorado. It went on to serve as an important milling and supply center for the mining region which accelerated the settlement of Colorado.
