After climbing out of the Los Angeles Basin (sea level, more or less) to Victorville (elev. 2900'), the road climbs and descends between 2000' and above 4000' before finally descending to Las Vegas at just above 2000'. Not a big deal for passenger vehicles with cruise control, but much more trouble for truckers.
