Estimates suggest that there are between 3,500 and 7,000 Snow Leopards left in the wild. Accurate counts are difficult because they are elusive and inhabit harsh and remote habitat so are rarely seen. Of this estimate there are about 600 animals in zoos around the world.

Snow leopards live throughout the mountains of Central Asia in Afghanistan, Bhutan, China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. It is thought China contains around 60% of all snow leopard habitat but unfortunately they have already disappeared from some areas including parts of Mongolia.

Snow Leopards are listed in C.I.T.E.S. (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) which makes it illegal to transport any whole Snow Leopard or body part across international borders.

The Snow Leopard Trust works with governments in Snow Leopard countries to strengthen conservation policies and programs. Most importantly, the Trust works with local communities and herders on reducing conflict between people and Snow Leopards.

There are many ways you can help save these amazing cats. One of the best ways is just by raising awareness about the plight of the Snow Leopard. You can also get involved by becoming a member of the Snow Leopard Trust, donating money towards conservation work, or volunteering your time. To find out more, please visit www.snowleopard.org
