spoiled wilderness

it is very easy, in africa, to wax nostalgic over a mighty wilderness never seen. at lake nakuru, in particular, the fourth biggest city in kenya is never far away and quite often in sight.
aided by images of 'animal planet,' 'national geographic' and 'the lion king' my mind wanders into the realms of imagination... where africa is a vast wilderness with no great inland cities, farmed small holdings, nomadic pasturalists and animals free to roam...
the encroachment of urbanisation (and all that comes with it) makes me wonder... is development always such a good thing?
* it is easy for me to wonder this from the freedom of a priveleged background. i wonder if i would feel the same had i grown up under different circumstances.
