Dairy discard, Douglas, shows off his adorableness at Animal Place. He and four other calves were rescued by Santa Cruz Animal Care and Services from a neglect case in which five male, dairy calves were being starved. They had been bought at auction for around -10/calf and were being raised for eventual slaughter.
Animal Place took two and another sanctuary took three.
Male dairy calves, particularly Jerseys, are considered trash by the dairy industry and dumped at auction at only 1-2 days of age. They are sold for veal or raised for "cheap beef".
