View from Hot Springs Mountain Tower, Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas.

The Arlington Resort Hotel & Spa is a nearly 500 room resort in the Ouachita Mountains of Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas, home of Oaklawn Race Track and the Arkansas Derby.

The resort has accommodations for single occupancy or groups between 20 and 2000. Mineral baths are available in the Spa between the third and fourth floor, which make use of the natural hot springs. Massages and hot stone treatments are also available in the Spa. The hotel contains three restaurants, an open bar in the main lobby, a full service beauty salon, a gift shop, a ladies shopping boutique, and live entertainment on weekends. Guests enjoy golf and tennis privileges at the Hot Springs Country Club, approximately 2.7 miles to the south east.

The hotel is located at the north end of "Bathhouse Row". As of 2009, the Arlington is a three star hotel.

Samuel W. Fordyce and two other entrepreneurs financed the construction of the first luxury hotel in the area, the first Arlington Hotel which opened in 1875. When it was rebuilt in 1892-93, it was known as the New Arlington, and boasted of its Spanish Renaissance architecture. With 300 rooms in four stories of red brick, it had corner towers. This second Arlington burned to the ground on April 5, 1923. Those buildings were at the north end of Bathhouse Row, where the Arlington Park then was created. The third Arlington Hotel, designed by Mann and Stern in 1925, is the current hotel at the "Y" intersection at the corner of Central Avenue and Fountain Street. The building's huge size, Spanish-Colonial Revival style, and placement at the terminus of the town's most important vista made the building a key Hot Springs landmark. The original site became a park at the north end of Bathhouse Row.

In the 1930s, the Arlington Hotel was a favorite vacation spot for Al Capone.

Thank you to all who participated in Celebrate Wildlife Day - Saturday, May 19, 2012 at the Grand Canyon Visitor Center.
Visitors who attended experienced family friendly activities throughout the day..
.
Approximately 2,700 park visitors joined rangers and event collaborators at the Grand Canyon Visitor Center to learn more about the park's wildlife and endangered species. .
.
As always, the real stars of the show were the animals themselves. The National Park Service and the Celebrate Wildlife Day team are extremely grateful to the Arizona Game and Fish Department of Wildlife Education Adobe Mountain Wildlife Center for their participation and for sharing their in-depth knowledge of Arizona’s wildlife during demonstrations held throughout the day. The Wildlife Center at Adobe Mountain works in cooperation with the Arizona Game and Fish Department to provide rehabilitative care for sick or injured wildlife, and to be an outstanding resource for education concerning Arizona's unique assortment of wild animals..
.
Celebrate Wildlife Day provides an opportunity for park visitors to learn about the Grand Canyon’s abundant wildlife and the work of wildlife biologists. It is made possible through the collaborative efforts of the National Park Service, Grand Canyon Association Arizona Game and Fish Department of Wildlife Education and Adobe Mountain Wildlife Center, the Peregrine Fund, Xanterra Parks and Resorts, and the Grand Canyon Unified School District. Celebrate Wildlife Day is dedicated to the memory of park biologist Eric York, who devoted his life to the study of wildlife.

Condor #87 gets wet in Pipe Creek along the Tonto Trail in Grand Canyon National Park.

Regarded as one of the rarest birds in the world, the California condor (Gymnogyps californianus) is the largest land bird in North America with a wingspan up to 9 1/2 feet and weighing up to 23 pounds. Adults are primarily black except for triangle-shaped patches of bright white underneath their wings. These patches are visible when condors are flying overhead and offer a key identification characteristic. Males and females are identical in size and plumage. The bare heads of condors are grayish-black as juveniles and turn a dull orange-pink as adults.

Condors are members of the New World vulture family and are opportunistic scavengers, feeding exclusively on dead animals such as deer, cattle, rabbits, and large rodents.

There are currently over 70 condors flying free in northern Arizona and southern Utah, including several that were raised in wild nest caves within or near to the Grand Canyon.

The rest come from the captive breeding program. Even the wild-raised birds are mostly now wearing numbered tags and transmitters. The numbers allow you to learn more specifics about any bird you get a close look at.

So look out for these magnificent birds soaring on their 9-foot (nearly 3-meter) wingspan over Grand Canyon National Park. During the warmer months they are seen regularly from the South Rim and frequently also from the North Rim. On the South Rim, try scanning the cliffs and Douglas-fir trees below the Bright Angel Lodge late in the afternoon. Most nights from late April through July and to some degree from March through October, some condors select overnight roosts in that area.

Wisdom returns to feed her chick
animal pound
Fish and Wildlife Service announced on 3/21 that Wisdom has returned.

In the face of tremendous losses of Laysan and black-footed albatross at the Refuge - including an estimated 110,000 chicks and 2,000 adults - to the tsunami that overwashed portions of the Refuge, biologists are thrilled to discover that Wisdom survived, said Barry Stieglitz, Project Leader for the Hawaiian and Pacific Islands National Wildlife Refuge Complex.

"Although wildlife biologists generally manage at the level of populations," Stieglitz said, "we, too, become entwined in the fates of individual animals. Wisdom is one such special creature. She has also provided us valuable information about the longevity of these beautiful birds - in her case over 60 years - and reinforces the importance of breeding adults in the population. It's also very humbling to know this 8-pound bird has been producing chicks longer than I have been alive."

The Refuge's other "celebrity" albatross' fate remains uncertain. The parents of the short-tailed albatross chick hatched on Midway's Eastern Island in January have yet to be seen. The chick - the first of its species hatched at Midway - was washed approximately 100 feet from its nest by the tsunami, but was later safely returned by Refuge biologists. Since the chick is incapable of fending for itself, the Service will carefully consider whether hand-rearing this bird is appropriate if it is determined that it is not being fed by its parents. It is believed these parents are at sea, gathering food for their chick like Wisdom was, and will be seen again. Grey Headed Vultures

We were sitting on the terrace of our cabaña while our two pound Chihuahua was playing in the field a short distance away. I noticed a vulture cruising the cliff in front of our cabaña and then saw him circle around and cruise over us. He landed in this dead tree and was shortly joined by a buddy. We quickly realized that these vultures don't just prey on dead things, small animals are targets too. We quickly scooped up our dog and put her in the cabaña. We shooed off the predators but for the rest of the day they periodically cruised over us to see if their prospective meal was afoot.

I've been working this past week on putting together a slide show of pictures taken during our trip to Arizona and Utah last fall. One of the great benefits of doing this is I found some images that I wanted to share on Flickr. I think it's a law that if you're a photographer on vacation you have to take at least one sunset picture.

Other silhouette pictures I've taken over the years can be seen in my silhouettes set.

Other pictures taken during our Red Rock Country trip can be seen here. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157631740697332/...

This looks best when viewed large against a dark background, and you can see it in that enlightened manner by pressing "L" on your keyboard.

Wilco is an American alternative rock band based in Chicago, Illinois. The band was formed in 1994 by the remaining members of alternative country group Uncle Tupelo following singer Jay Farrar's departure. Wilco's lineup has changed frequently, with only singer Jeff Tweedy and bassist John Stirratt remaining from the original incarnation. Since early 2004, the other current members are guitarist Nels Cline, multi-instrumentalists Pat Sansone and Mikael Jorgensen, and drummer Glenn Kotche. Wilco has released eight studio albums, a live double album, and three collaborations: two with Billy Bragg, and one with The Minus 5.

Wilco's music has been inspired by a wide variety of artists and styles, including Bill Fay and Television, and has in turn influenced music by a number of modern alternative rock acts. The band continued in the alternative country of Uncle Tupelo on its debut album A.M. (1995), but has since introduced more experimental aspects to their music, including elements of alternative rock and classic pop.

Wilco garnered media attention for its fourth album, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (2002), and the controversy surrounding it. After the recording sessions were complete, Reprise Records rejected the album and dismissed Wilco from the label. As part of a buy-out deal, Reprise gave Wilco the rights to the album for free. After streaming Foxtrot on its website, Wilco sold the album to Nonesuch Records in 2002. Both record labels are subsidiaries of Warner Music Group, leading one critic to say the album showed "how screwed up the music business is in the early twenty-first century." Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is Wilco's most successful release to date, selling over 670,000 copies. Wilco won two Grammy Awards for their fifth studio album, 2004's A Ghost Is Born, including Best Alternative Music Album. Wilco's most recent studio album, The Whole Love, was released on September 27, 2011.

The leopard (pronounced /leopərd/; Panthera pardus) is a member of the Felidae family and the smallest of the four "big cats" in the genus Panthera; the other three being the tiger, lion and jaguar. Once distributed across southern Asia and Africa, from Korea to South Africa, the leopard's range of distribution has decreased radically due to hunting and loss of habitat, and the greatest concentration of leopards now occurs chiefly in sub-Saharan Africa; there are also fragmented populations in Pakistan, India, Indochina, Malaysia, and China. Due to the loss of range and declines in population, it is graded as a "Near Threatened" species. Its numbers are greater than other Panthera species, all of which face more acute conservation concerns.
The leopard has relatively short legs and a long body, with a large skull. It is similar in appearance to the jaguar, although it is of smaller and slighter build. Its fur is marked with rosettes that are similar to those of the jaguar, though the leopard's rosettes are smaller and more densely packed. Leopards that are melanistic, that is either completely black or very dark, are known as black panthers.
The species' success in the wild owes in part to its opportunistic hunting behavior, its adaptability to habitats, and its ability to move at up to approximately 58 kilometres (36 miles) an hour. The leopard consumes virtually any animal it can hunt down and catch. Its preferred habitat ranges from rainforest to desert terrains. Its ecological role is similar to the American cougar.
